Throughout January, Thump Coffee in downtown Bend hosts an exclusive sneak preview of “Push” skateboard decks customized by dozens of local, regional and national artists, including Adam Haynes, Mark Rada, Aaron Draplin, and T-Fly. The skateboard artworks will be auctioned in mid-February to benefit the Division Street Skatepark Project. Complimenting the Push showing are mixed media works in two- and three-dimensions by Bend artist and educator, Lloyd McMullen.
McMullen works extensively with found and recycled materials. “Everyday settings and homely objects inspire my art,” she explains. “Snatches of conversation overheard and cast-off items discovered underfoot serve as raw material and metaphor.”
McMullen’s two- and three-dimensional acrylic paintings are layered with deep transparent glazes to 
embed objects and color within the work. “My work is about time, seeking glimpses of history revealed in simple objects,” she says. “Discarded and broken detritus; random words from fortunes cookies, the daily news, found scraps of paper, classic works of literature ‘paint’ and reveal from the inside out. Currently my work explores figurative/abstract themes as story and symbol.”
McMullen is a Print Associate at Atelier 6000, a fine art prints studio and artists’ workshop in Bend; one of the founding members of Artists Local 101, a Central Oregon-based contemporary art group; Visual Arts Program Director at Young Musicians & Artists, a Willamette University-based program.
McMullen’s work is currently on display in the “On the Cutting Edge” exhibit at the Coos Art Museum. In Bend, work is on display in the “Paper Rock Scissors” show at Atelier 6000, and includes an outdoor installation, “Enlightenment”, at Gossamer, the Knitting Place. Recent invitational/juried exhibits include Atelier 6000, the 135 UP! gallery, and Central Oregon Community College in Bend, OR; the Art House Gallery, Atlanta, GA.; Maude Kerns Art Center, Eugene, OR; the Firehouse Gallery, Del Rio Council for the Arts, TX; and includes outdoor installations in Central Oregon.

According to organizers, Push is modeled after a similar community skatepark project in Montana and inspired by Portland’s famed Burnside skatepark and similar DIY parks. “Though we have lots of sun here in Central Oregon, a covered skatepark designed, built, and maintained by skaters without the help of the parks dept, or the city is the goal,” say organizers.
Situated on Division Street under the Bend Parkway, the land is currently vacant and strewn with large boulders. The project crew, comprised of volunteers who have dreamt of such an opportunity for years, has already formed a 501(c)3 nonprofit in order to secure grants and funds for building the park, which has already won the support of the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Sculpture garden? Low-water xeriscape landscaping? Business signage? How about all three? Mother’s Juice Café’s latest contribution to Galveston Avenue neighborhood beautification blends art, sustainability and commerce. Under the shade of a “Mother’s Juice Café” sculptural metal tree flourishes beds of sculptural metal flowers with small placards for Open, Espresso and other simple messages.
Mother’s Juice Café owner Mike Sackin tapped into his landscaping background to collaborate with Bend metal sculptor Andy Wachs at Weld Studio on the modern designs.
“We worked with the Mother’s tree-inspired logo to create a modern sculpture that also serves as signage in an organic way,” says Wachs. “It simulates a tree and plant forms and incorporates local landscapes for a playful, eye-catching blend of signage, garden and art,” Wachs explains.
The signs are constructed of steel and aluminum with traces of patina and rust to blend in with the surrounding Central Oregon desert environment.
Mother’s owners Mike and Janet Sackin, are also committed to supporting the local arts community by providing their venue as a platform for local artist to feature their work monthy.
“With our new sculpture garden emerging out front - we hope the community can be inspired to bring art into any environment,” states Mike Sackin.

Local tattoo artist Dirk Spece tag teams with local radio show host and crypto-zoologist Alex Reisfar in an artistic journey to lesser explored corners of the human psyche this month at Thump Coffee in downtown Bend. Throughout September, Spece displays his woodcut prints, and he invited Reisfar to exhibit his paintings on glass, as well.
Reisfar was born in Romania, and orphaned when his mother, an oil painter, was killed in a logging accident. Adopted by a Bend couple at age 2, he grew up here with a working woodcarver, Tristan Reisfar, for an adoptive father. “I think a fear of death, brought on by the loss of my mother at such a young age, was for me the main drive in wanting to become a great painter,” says Alex Reisfar.

Mother’s Juice Café in Bend is making a commitment to support the local arts community by featuring rotating monthly visual art exhibits. In September, Tumalo artist Lisa Copenhagen Wachs shows a collection of new oil paintings.
“The painting images are part of what I refer to as the ‘Drive By’ series,” says Copenhagen Wachs. “I snap photos while I am driving — usually over to Portland and back, around Warm Springs — and compile segments to create an amalgamation of different glances of landscape while passing through.”
Copenhagen Wachs has been a fixture on the local art scene for more than a decade. She works as a self-employed graphic designer and fine artist and has worked and lived in Portland, Oregon, San Francisco and Taos, New Mexico before settling in the Bend area in 1992. She paints primarily in oils and also works in mixed media collage/assemblage. She works in her Tumalo studio, which overlooks the high desert landscape.
Owners Mike and Janet Sackin, who bought Mother's Juice Café one year ago, are committed to supporting the local arts community by providing this opportunity to local artists to showcase their works. “My background is landscaping, and incorporating art into our lives is a natural part of who we are and what we want Mother’s Juice Café to be,” explains Mike Sackin.

ART: Michael J. Caligure Photography (throughout August)
Michael J. Caligure, a full-time Bend firefighter since 1982, exhibits images of professional Bend Fire & Rescue firefighters during training and local emergencies in his August photography exhibition this month. Having the experience of both a photographer and a firefighter, Caligure depicts first-hand the energy, emotion and magnificent blaze of the fire scene, while documenting the heroes who risk their lives everyday for our community.
The exhibition at thump is a personal statement of Caligure’s career and his enthusiasm for depicting firefighters in action on the scene. Caligure’s photography tells stories of the personal tests, experiences and conquests in the life of a firefighter.
In this exhibition, Caligure’s subject is firefighters in action, however Caligure also enjoys capturing images relating to everyday life and important landmarks in one’s own journey. “My passion for photography began around 1979 when I purchased my first camera,” Caligure says. “ I enjoy outdoor activities, so many of my photographs consist of landscapes and aerials.” His body of work also includes portraits and sporting events.

Thumpology: Coffee Blends - A Different Story
July’s Thumpology explored the seasonality of coffee harvesting and how, like eating fresh produce when it’s in season, drinking coffees brewed from newly harvested beans is a more flavorful and enjoyable experience. Some coffeehouses — like thump — feature ever-changing drip coffee offerings that reflect what coffees have been recently harvested around the world. As mentioned last month, coffee blends have a different story to tell.
If you visit a coffeehouse and notice the same blend of beans being served throughout the year, the coffee roaster might use the same beans each time to create that blend (for example, a combination of Guatemalan, Indonesian and Brazilian). Those green beans might be up to a year old — the time passed since the last harvest.
Here’s a different scenario: Throughout the year, the roaster uses different, newly harvested beans in the blend and recreates a consistent flavor for the blend. For example, thump uses Stumptown Coffee Roaster’s Hair Bender Espresso Blend 365 days of the year. It’s Stumptown’s challenge to maintain a consistent flavor profile in this blend using an ever-changing selection of coffees.
Stumptown continually explores the body, complexity, acidity and flavor compatibility of their coffees. Each coffee that makes up the blend is roasted separately to develop its individual flavor profile so it will be optimally compatible with the other beans in the blend as well as to address its unique physical aspects, such as bean size, density, and moisture content (see past thumpologies on roasting). The beans are then blended together at the proper ratio to maintain that beautifully complex flavor that keeps us all coming back for more.
If you strip away the milk and flavorings and just taste the espresso, you’ll appreciate that this
blend is dynamic and changing subtly and tantalizingly throughout the year because of its ever-changing “ingredients” — but it’s consistently delicious! To blend well without taking the beans to a dark roast, which effectively roasts out the flavors of the individual beans, is a true art. Three cheers for a great blend and a talented roaster!

First Friday August: The Brothers Wachs
(Bend, OR) Beginning Friday, August 1, the sculptures and paintings of Andrew Wachs and David Wachs will be on display at tbd loft. The show opens with a First Friday reception from 5 – 9 p.m. and runs through September.
Painter David Wachs has lived in Oregon most of his life. For the last 14 years he has lived in the same house in Tumalo. “I have never lived in one place as long as I have here,” commented David. “Working in a converted dairy barn on our property is a dream come true for me.”
During art school at Montana State, David made a lifelong commitment to the
landscape as subject matter and has faithfully retained this approach to content. He is inspired by the places he is so lucky to visit. Canyons, mountains, sage 
covered hills, basalt cliffs/breaks and dry deserts are the impressions that become my work. “I know when I see a painting I will do in the countryside,” explained David. “I bring those emotions back to my studio to create images.”
Andrew Wachs is a metal artist who lives and works in Bend, Oregon. The landscape and color fields of central Oregon continually inspire Andrew. and Much of his work is representative of my many travels from Bend to Portland. Andrew’s most recent works are in Bend’s new roundabout located at Bond and Wilson in the Old Mill District as well as a public sculpture in Northwest Crossing.
The work exhibited at tbd loft will represent a broad perspective of Andrew’s recent work. Andrew works primarily in steel and the exhibit at tbd loft is a study of composition and form.

Internationally recognized music interpretative painters VORCAN will be making a stop at this year’s festival. Formed in 2006, VORCAN is a collaboration between two prolific artists, Vort and Cank, who started an art production company and abstract art consulting firm called in Philadelphia. They began collaboratively painting live music of all genres in a variety of venues and events throughout Philadelphia and New York City. Using the music and environment as inspiration, Vort and Cank, create fine art using collaborative imagery. VORCAN has painted over 250 events in The United States and across Europe.
“I can't wait to paint Zilla again at 4 Peaks Music Festival,” says VORCAN’s Chris Cank, “When we painted Zilla before, as the band played musicians throughout the festival began to join in. First Steve Kimock, and then Anahata, Sasha Butterfly Rose, and Lynx. There were other musicians joining in to become the Sonic Bloom Orchestra. The outcome was a waterfall of an incredible soundscape never to be replicated in history.”

Local artist Chris “Buffalo” Folsom, known for his larger-than-life metal sculpture creations, will also be working on-site at the festival. Folsom, whose work includes strikingly graceful animal sculptures such as his piece titled “Momma Bear and Cubs in Traffic Circle” located in a Madras roundabout, will provide festival-goers with the opportunity to watch first hand as the artist creates innovative and original work.

There are plenty of fun, hands-on activities for the kids and the whole family to enjoy during the festival. Continuing from last year, kids are welcomed to create festival prayer flags which are hung on site at the festival. Fun stations for the kids to play in will be provided by local Bend businesses. such as Gigglybops, Kids Central and others. Storytelling, juggling, poi workshops, water balloons toss contests and black light mural paintings will also be available for kid’s entertainment. Parents and adults can settle in and relax at The Dragon Lounge and have some maté tea, soda, iced coffee, beer, wine, or cocktails while their children have fun hula-hooping with the best, Molly Hogan, and enjoying the kid friendly environment. (Bend, OR) Aspiring auteurs, home video fanatics, students and anyone else from Central Oregon who can pick up a camera, shoot a video and upload it to the FilmmakersWanted.com website are invited to round one of the Filmmakers Wanted! Central Oregon Film Contest. There is no fee to enter, but the submission deadline is June 16.
Round One: Upload your favorite piece of video to the site to share with the community. The best 10 submissions selected by the Filmmakers Wanted judges (local film directors and producers) will be invited to Round Two.
Round Two: Top 10 filmmakers will be given a topic and six weeks to script, cast, shoot and edit a new film, which will be available for public viewing and voting on FilmmakersWanted.com and Bend Broadband Video-On-Demand. Winners will be announced at a premeire screening in September.
Top vote-getters win a $200 Costco gift card for third place, a $500 Connecting Point Computers gift card for second place, and first place takes home a Sony HD Camera and a $200 Best Buy gift card.

ART: Shelby Leigh Photography (throughout May)
According to photographer Shelby Leigh, her work is an extension of sometimes-quiet observations and how she sees tiny moments in time. In her travels near and far - the exhibit includes photos from Oregon, Morocco and Chile - she likes to "notice the little things and bring them to others so that they too can see the beauty and intricacies that this world has to offer." Though she says her stories are infused in each image, she invites you to "let your imagination take you on your own journey to find peace, simplicity and wonder."
Recently making the transition from film cameras to fully digital photography, Leigh explains that her newer images were shot with a Nikon D70 camera and digitally printed from an Epson 2200 printer, while most of her photos have been taken with many different traditional film SLR cameras, scanned, then printed from the Epson 2200.

MEET BUFFALO
Here's the intro from his website: "My name is Christopher "Buffalo" Folsom. Most people call me Buffalo. The monicker was formed during my work as an archaeologist in the State of Utah. A couple of Native Americans I was working with started calling me Tatanka, the Sioux word for the American Bison. Over time, it evolved to "Buffalo".
If you have ever seen a Buffalo, you understand the incredible size and power that they posses. If I apply this analogy to my sculptures, it would reflect my passion for life, beauty and accomplishing what might seem impossible. One of the best compliments I have received was the loss of a commission as the client felt my work "brought out too much emotion". My belief is that there can never be too much emotion.
Several pieces I have created involve the use of recycled materials. I have been refered to as a junk artist, a genius and everything in between. As you view this site, you be the judge. Enjoy!"

featured coffee: Costa Rica Montes de Oro - Washed Processed
From Kent: This is the same bean we were serving a few months ago, however the current lot has been processed differently. The fully washed process produces a cleaner, brighter, and slightly sweeter flavor. Where the previous lot exhibited flavors of grape, cherry and milk chocolate; the current lot shows lemon, dark chocolate, and brown sugar. I love the way this bean illustrates the importance of the processing method on the final cup quality (see Thumpology below).

A coffee industry veteran, Amy was a long-time manager at Starbucks back in the days before they adopted fully automatic espresso machines. You'll find Amy here on weekends. During the week, she helps manage a world-class outrigger and surf paddle company, Kialoa Paddles. thumpology: Processing Coffee - From Fresh Cherry to Dried Green Bean
In previous Thumpology articles we've discussed how the roast can affect a coffee's flavor. How it is processed after harvest can have an even more significant influence on its ultimate flavor.
Not to be confused with processing food, which might involve removing nutrients, adding artificial stabilizers, flavors, preservatives, etc., processing coffee is an all-natural sequence of steps taken after picking the coffee to prepare it for market.
Coffees are harvested when the fruit surrounding the bean, known as the cherry, is ripe. The cherry holds necessary sugars and desirable flavors that need to be infused into the coffee bean. Farmers use two primary processing methods to release these flavors from the cherry: the dry process and the wet process.
Dry Process (aka Natural Process): The cherry is left on the bean and dried naturally in the open air by sunlight on large patios, where the coffee is continually raked for even drying and mildew prevention. Once properly dried, the cherry is removed from the bean. The dry process method can be hard to control due to the coffee's vulnerability to environmental elements (rain, humidity, sun) while drying. The end result can be mixed and unpredictable. A dry processed coffee may be heavy bodied, sweet, smooth and complex.
Washed Process (aka Wet Process): The cherry is removed from the bean, but a thin, sweet, slimy layer, called mucilage, remains. The beans are placed in fermentation tanks for 12 -36 hours for flavor development, then they undergo extensive washing to remove remaining mucilage and fermentation residue. This is a more controlled method with more consistent results. A washed process coffee may taste cleaner, brighter, and fruitier.
The washed process is water intensive and is more likely to be used in growing regions with easy access to water - and by farmers with the money to build the infrastructure needed for processing. Whereas the dry process is likely to be used in growing regions with lower humidity and reliably dry, sunny periods to prevent the cherries from mildewing while drying.
Our May featured coffee is Costa Rica Montes de Oro - Washed Processed. Previously, we carried the natural processed Montes de Oro, which was heavier, even thick in body and very citrusy. By contrast the washed version is very clean, smooth with very balanced citrus notes. The same bean, processed differently has yielded extremely different results. Which is better? That's up to you to decide!
