Sculpture garden? Low-water xeriscape landscaping? Business signage? How about all three? Mother’s Juice Café’s latest contribution to Galveston Avenue neighborhood beautification blends art, sustainability and commerce. Under the shade of a “Mother’s Juice Café” sculptural metal tree flourishes beds of sculptural metal flowers with small placards for Open, Espresso and other simple messages.
Mother’s Juice Café owner Mike Sackin tapped into his landscaping background to collaborate with Bend metal sculptor Andy Wachs at Weld Studio on the modern designs.
“We worked with the Mother’s tree-inspired logo to create a modern sculpture that also serves as signage in an organic way,” says Wachs. “It simulates a tree and plant forms and incorporates local landscapes for a playful, eye-catching blend of signage, garden and art,” Wachs explains.
The signs are constructed of steel and aluminum with traces of patina and rust to blend in with the surrounding Central Oregon desert environment.
Mother’s owners Mike and Janet Sackin, are also committed to supporting the local arts community by providing their venue as a platform for local artist to feature their work monthy.
“With our new sculpture garden emerging out front - we hope the community can be inspired to bring art into any environment,” states Mike Sackin.

(BEND, OR) Scenes from Central Oregon by local photographer Kristin Klus are showcased at Thump Coffee in downtown Bend throughout November. Klus’s works bridge the gap between classic darkroom photography and newer digital techniques in the artist’s self-described quest to create photographs as “powerful as nature itself.”
“Photography is my way to share my adventures with the world,” says Klus. “My goal has always been to create photographs as powerful as nature itself by capturing the perfect lighting, angle, and exposure while in the field. The focus of my current collection is on capturing the beautiful landscapes and wildlife that I am so lucky to be exposed to here in Central Oregon.”
A native Oregonian who grew up with a strong love for the outdoors, Klus discovered a passion for photography in a high school photography class, and she pursued both academic training — earning a degree in photography — and hands-on experience working at a camera shop while attending Central Oregon Community College.

Help Shape Land Use in Deschutes County-Input Needed at October Meetings

Deschutes County has prepared a new draft of the Comprehensive Plan
for the first time since 1979. Over the next three months, the Deschutes
County Community Development Department will host 10 public meetings
to discuss the new draft Plan to obtain feedback from County residents.
The Community Plans within the Comprehensive Plan are specific
blueprints of how and where growth and development occur and how natural
resources will be protected in the unincorporated areas of the County
for the next 20 years. The draft Plan is based on public input received
over the past year, changes to state law, coordination with other
agencies and organizations and in-depth analysis of current conditions
and trends.
The County is asking for comments on all aspects of the Plan, from its
general themes to specific actions. The following meeting address
specific Community Plans that include growth and development affecting
each community. Give your input and learn more about the Community
Plan at these October meetings:

Brian Daly Miniatures Photography at Mother’s Juice Café in October
(Bend, OR) For the first time in Bend, local photographer Brian Daly exhibits his lilliputian photographic scenes in a solo show at Mother’s Juice Café throughout October. This series of photos depicts scenes created with miniature models ½-inch to 1-inch tall – people, cars, buildings, trees and other tiny figures, mostly “from my children's toys, or an old train set,” says Daly.
A photographer for 20 years, Daly recently started doing more studio work, including these miniature scenes. “The challenge is to try and throw some dramatic lighting into the scene and make the picture something it is not,” he explains. “I want to make the viewer, if even for a second, think, ‘Is that real? How did he do that?’”
Some shots, he says, “mimic a beautiful every day scene, with others the challenge is to create some tension or drama. And some are just to have fun.”

We had a great turnout for the painting party with kids from three
schools and others participating this year too! We are having the Art
For India Fundraiser on Sun.,Oct. 25th, 5-9pm at the old Boomtown
location on the corner of Greenwood and Harriman (across from the
Blacksmith restaurant). Come pick your piece of the canvas! There will
also be live music from Chris Chabot, Leif James and the Autonomics!
Food, Beverages,Silent Artful Auction and a Slide Presentation of our
project in India. Tickets are the same as last year...$15-Adults,
